About Us

The Ayutthaya Thai Restaurant is a traditional Thai Restaurant based in Hull city Centre and has been serving the local Hull residents along with visitors to the city since 2001. Our philosophy has been to keep it authentic and simple. Our head chef was born in the city of Ayutthaya (hence the difficult to pronounce name !!!) and has been cooking for as long as she can remember, but cooking commercially since the age of 14

History Lesson

The city of Ayutthaya was founded by King U-Thong in 1350 and was the capital of then Siam, Now Thailand for over 400 years. Ayutthaya became one of the largest cities within Asia during the 17th century and was admired by foreign visitors for its outstanding beauty and prosperity.

During its history Ayutthaya was involved in some 70 wars and twice suffered major defeats.  Eventually, in 1769, the city of Ayutthaya was completely destroyed and burnt down resulting in the move of the capital to Bangkok which remains as the capital city today.

The ruins of the ancient city, one of the greatest in the world at the time, still stand and in 1991 the whole of the old city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you are ever in Bangkok then the city of Ayutthaya is less than an hours drive or 1 ½ hours by train and is well worth a day trip or even a few days where the hectic lifestyle of Bangkok can become a distant memory and a more serene and traditional way of Thai life can be sampled.
